Abstract
The Filipino family is currently navigating a host of challenges that have reshaped its structure and functions. Within these transformations, the family environment remains a crucial determinant of learners’ behavior, self-awareness, and overall self-concept. This descriptive study, conducted in a public high school in the Philippines during the school year 2023–2024, investigated the self-concept of 133 learners from both intact and disrupted families. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire and a researcher-developed self-concept assessment tool, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency count, mean, Kruskal–Wallis, and Mann–Whitney U tests. Findings revealed that learners from both intact and disrupted families generally exhibited a “high” level of self-concept, with no significant differences across sex, age, or grade level. However, nuances emerged: male learners from both family types showed a “moderate” self-concept, older learners reported a “moderate” self-concept compared to their younger counterparts with a “high” self-concept, and learners in Grades 7 and 9 demonstrated a “moderate” self-concept. These results underscore the importance of adopting strength-based guidance and counseling programs in schools. Such initiatives can provide learners with meaningful activities and supportive opportunities within their social environment, thereby fostering the development of a more positive self-concept.
